The recall involves Topway Enterprise Inc. (also known as Kazy’s Gourmet) ready-to-eat seafood products, including raw tuna and salmon, particularly for use in sushi.
The fish filets are wrapped in clear plastic wrap. They were distributed to restaurants in Texas and Louisiana from July 10 through July 13, 2019.
In February 2019, the FDA inspected a Topway facility and found “serious sanitation issues,” which the company promised to fix.
However, when Texas state health officials returned to the facility, 4 tests of the facility were positive for Listeria monocytogenes and officials did not see any corrective actions for the sanitation issues.
Unlike most bacteria, Listeria can grow at refrigeration temperatures and freezing will not destroy or reduce the bacteria.
The FDA is recommending that consumers in Texas and Louisiana who recently ate raw seafood products, particularly salmon and tuna, should contact the restaurant about where the seafood came from.
Infections with Listeria may not show symptoms for up to 70 days. Pregnant women may not have symptoms, but suffer a miscarriage, stillbirth, or infection of the newborn. Other complications include meningitis (brain inflammation), blood infections, and death.
